It is official since Wednesday, the Diekirch Military Center will know an unprecedented total investment of 137 million euros to renovate, modernise and expand the Barracks, pillar of the Luxembourg Army.

EUR 137 million for the modernisation and extension of the Härebierg military barracks

Built mainly in the 1950s, the Grand-Duc Jean barracks at Härebierg in Diekirch need to be renovated and modernised to better meet the ever-increasing missions of the Luxembourg Army, particularly within NATO.

Over the last four years, investments of € 67 million have already been made in infrastructure at the Härebierg, including the construction of the logistics hall inaugurated in 2015.

These massive investments will allow the redevelopment of existing buildings as well as the construction of a central kitchen and sports facilities allowing staff to train in the best conditions.

After renovation the energy consumption of the Barracks should be divided by 2, the materials used in the renovation and expansion will respect the principles of sustainable development and ecological criteria.

The rehabilitation and modernization program concerns a total of approximately 83,000 m2 of gross built space, of which approximately 16,500 m2 is new construction and 66,500 m2 is renovated.

This renovation and modernization is part of the ambitious strategy of Defense 2025 and the attachment of Luxembourgish to their army is a no brainer after the success met by the Open door of the Military Center on July 9 for the 50 years of voluntary military service in Luxembourg.
