Alcohol use can be addictive, but health risks (cardiovascular disease, liver cirrhosis, cancers and mental disorders) and collateral damage to the consumer’s environment (accidents, violence, trauma, etc.) are often ignored.
Based on this observation, the Ministry of Health initiated the national action week entitled “Alcohol? Less is better! ” from May 14 to May 21, campaign simultaneously conducted in Germany, Austria, Switzerland and Liechtenstein.
This week’s objective is to raise awareness of excessive alcohol consumption risks by reminding the problems and consumption thresholds from which the individual is at risk.
Ministry reminds that alcohol consumption in Luxembourg is higher than the European average. The risk thresholds are for a woman consuming more than 20g of pure alcohol per day, for man the threshold goes to 40g.
With regard to excessive weekly alcohol consumption (consumption of at least 5 standard alcoholic beverages on the same occasion), they are twice as frequent in the Grand Duchy as in the EU average.
