The Ministry of Health calls for vigilance after the discovery of a proliferation of cyanobacteria (blue-green bacteria) in the stagnant waters of the rivers of Moselle, France. Cyanobacteria can release toxins that can pose a risk to public health (skin irritations, headaches, nausea, gastroenteritis, cramps, paralysis, liver damage).
The excessive presence of cyanobacteria is identifiable by the formation of colored carpets (greenish-blue coloration or pea mashed color). It comes from a high water temperature.
It is recommended not to swim in the areas where these bacteria are present, nor to drink water (for humans and animals).
