The arrival of Californian giant Google in Luxembourg is a never ending story. While the data center and cyber security industry is a pillar of the government’s strategy in information technology development, Google’s arrival in Luxembourg fascinates as much as it frightens.
First the actors in the sector already in Luxembourg see the Google arrival with a certain concern as the reputation of the firm and the size of the investment (close to a billion euros) impress. Then an investment of this size would make it the biggest investment in the history of the country and would be a success for the government.
But the members of the government are not on the same line regarding the Google arrival in the Grand Duchy. While Minister of Economy Etienne Schneider is on all fronts to make the case succeed even if Google puts pressure on the government with a high bargaining power, the Minister of Sustainable Development and Infrastructures François Bausch is seen more reserved and does not want to “have Google that do not pay a penny, while we have to build infrastructure. ”
To the point that MP Laurent Mosar (CSV) questions the position of the government and asks the Prime Minister Xavier Bettel about the arrival of Google in Luxembourg.
Let us bet that the pragmatism will make possible to find a solution that will satisfy all the parties.
