It’s official since today, the Luxembourg government will initiate a bill to allow the Luxembourg state to acquire, launch and operate a satellite and its ground segment for Earth observation allowing the government to satisfy its defense needs and obligations.
As we know since last year, Luxembourg is implementing an ambitious defense strategy by 2025. Although the country is small and can not compete with its neighbours or other members of the Atlantic Alliance, it nonetheless wishes to respect its role in NATO and to participate in the Alliance’s missions.
The acquisition and operation of this very high-resolution Earth observation satellite therefore enables Luxembourg to participate in a tangible and significant way in international initiatives and operations, both in the context of NATO missions and within the framework of the European Union.
This decision put the country into military satellites, until now the space strategy of the Grand Duchy turned to mining exploration, a non military activity.
In its ambitious strategy of 2025 and its desire to develop an air component within the Luxembourg Army, the Grand Duchy has communicated its willingness to purchase helicopters and drones for surveillance of airspace.
The government council of the day also approved the acquisition, through the NATO Agency for Support and Acquisition, of two Airbus 145M multi-role helicopters for the needs of the Defense with the aim of also meeting the needs of the Police by creating maximum synergies in the context of the exploitation.
